HL7
Standards for Health
The
National eHealth Transition Authority (NEHTA) has confirmed Health
Level 7 (HL7) as the national standard for secure electronic
messaging. The long awaited announcement came from Ian Reinecke,
the Chief Executive Officer of NEHTA recently.
In
the short term, NEHTA has endorsed the continued support of HL7
version 2, which is used by a large number of areas in the
healthcare sector, including pathology, radiology and patient
administration.
In
the medium to long term, NEHTA has endorsed a service oriented
approach based on HL7 Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) and HL7
services specifications for shared electronic health records.
To
assist in getting healthcare systems working towards conformant
HL7 messaging, HL7 Australia has contracted the Collaborative
Centre for eHealth (CCeH) to deliver a series of HL7 training
courses in all Australian capital cities over the next two years.
The training courses will initially concentrate on HL7 version 2
and will then go on to CDA and HL7 version 3. CCeH has also been
contracted to deliver educational seminars and workshops on a
variety of HL7 subjects.
Four separate
training courses all on V2 with different focus and target
audiences will be run consecutively in each capital city as
follows:
